Some big games are on tap early

> SOUTHERN INDIANA — It’s basketball season — and for two weeks at least — the courts belong to the girls.

All four local teams won in Tuesday’s Henryville Tipoff Tournament, which could be a good sign for Southern Indiana’s small schools in 2013-14. Henryville, Clarksville, Providence and Christian Academy should also be improved.

Floyd Central, which is expected to be the area’s top big school, opens Saturday at Evansville Harrison. Jeffersonville, which has its fourth coach in four years in Mike Warren, travels to North Harrison on Friday for its opener.

Here’s a look at the week’s top 10 games to watch this week, beginning tonight through next Tuesday:

GAME OF THE WEEK

AUSTIN (0-1) AT NEW WASHINGTON (0-0)

DAY/TIME: 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

LAST 10 YEARS: Austin 8-2.

LAST YEAR: At Austin 63, New Washington 45.

REASON TO WATCH: Two defending sectional champions meet early in the season. It’s the opener for New Wash, which dropped only three games last year. One was to Austin. This should be a big early win for the Mustangs.

THE PICK: New Washington 55, Austin 52.

THURSDAY

IRVINGTON PREP (0-1) AT CLARKSVILLE (1-0)

TIME: 7:30 p.m. (Henryville Tipoff Tournament)

LAST 10 YEARS: Clarksville 1-0.

LAST YEAR: At Clarksville 59, Irvington Prep 31.

REASON TO WATCH: Clarksville, which won just four times a year ago, put up 104 points in its season-opening 84-point win over Medora.

THE PICK:  Clarksville 77, Irvington Prep 49.

MADISON SHAWE (0-1) AT PROVIDENCE (1-0)

TIME: 7:30 p.m. (Henryville Tipoff Tournament)

LAST 10 YEARS: Providence 5-0.

LAST YEAR: Providence 51, at Shawe 25.

REASON TO WATCH: Freshman Claire Rauck broke the Providence single-game scoring record with 33 points — in her debut. Rauck and the Pioneers expect to have their first winning season since 2003 and the 31-point win over Crothersville was a great start.

THE PICK: Providence 69, Shawe 39.

FRIDAY

CLARKSVILLE (1-0) AT HENRYVILLE (1-0)

TIME: 7:30 p.m. (Henryville Tipoff Tournament)

LAST 10 YEARS: Henryville 8-6.

LAST YEAR: Henryville 47, at Clarksville 28 (Tipoff Tournament); At Henryville 37, Clarksville 25 (regular season).

REASON TO WATCH: After Tuesday’s results, it’s pretty clear that this is like a semifinal game. The winner will go on to the championship and the loser will head to the consolation game.

THE PICK: Henryville 60, Clarksville 47.

CHRISTIAN ACADEMY AT PROVIDENCE

TIME: 7:30 p.m. (Henryville Tipoff Tournament)

LAST 10 YEARS: Providence 6-0.

LAST YEAR: At Providence 39, Christian Academy 31.

REASON TO WATCH: Although CAI isn’t officially part of the tournament, the win would count for the Pioneers and likely give them a spot in Saturday’s championship game.

THE PICK: Providence 53, Christian Academy 37.

JEFFERSONVILLE (0-0) AT NORTH HARRISON (2-0)

TIME: 7:30 p.m.

LAST 10 YEARS: Jeffersonville 7-3.

LAST YEAR: At Jeffersonville 72, North Harrison 57.

REASON TO WATCH: Jeffersonville should have a decent team by the end of the year. It will be interesting to see how quickly the Red Devils adapt to Warren. There’s little doubt that the former New Albany boys’ assistant coach will get the job done, but opening at 2-0 North Harrison is a tough way to start.

THE PICK: North Harrison 66, Jeffersonville 61.

SEYMOUR (2-0) AT SILVER CREEK (0-0)

TIME: 7:30 p.m.

LAST 10 YEARS: Silver Creek 1-0.

LAST YEAR: Silver Creek 44, at Seymour 41.

REASON TO WATCH: A year ago, the Dragons got big win at Seymour in their opener. This year, Creek should be even better.

THE PICK: Silver Creek 55, Seymour 48.

FLOYD CENTRAL (0-0) AT EVANSVILLE HARRISON (0-0)

TIME: 8 p.m.

LAST 10 YEARS: Floyd Central 7-4.

LAST YEAR: Harrison 61, at Floyd Central 58.

REASON TO WATCH: A road victory to get things started should kickstart a great season for the Highlanders. Floyd should have its best team since the 2010 regional championship squad.

THE PICK: Floyd Central 69, Harrison 58.

SATURDAY

HENRYVILLE TIPOFF TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONSHIP

TIME: 6 p.m.

LAST YEAR’S CHAMPION: Oldenburg Academy.

REASON TO WATCH: Although Clarksville may be in the mix, the title should come down to Providence and Henryville. A season-opening tournament title would be big for either burgeoning program.

THE PICK: Henryville 48, Providence 43.

SOUTHWESTERN (1-0) AT EASTERN (1-0)

TIME: 7:30 p.m.

LAST 10 YEARS: Eastern 1-0.

LAST YEAR: Eastern 58, at Southwestern 48.

REASON TO WATCH: Both teams began the 2013-14 campaign with nice victories. The Musketeers are hoping to rebound from last year’s 10-13 season.

THE PICK: Eastern 48, Southwestern 44.
