HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: No. 6 Pioneers pull out overtime win at Austin

Shahroudi scores career-high 23 in Providence’s 50-47 victory

AUSTIN — Ben Shahroudi scored a game- and career-high 23 points to lead the Providence boys’ basketball team to a 50-47 overtime win over host Austin on Tuesday night.

The Class 2A No. 6 Pioneers tied the game at 41 at the end of the regulation when senior Grant Goad made a layup.

With the score tied at 47 in overtime, the Eagles (1-2) missed a field goal and then got called for an over-and-back foul on the rebound with one second left. Shortly thereafter, the Austin bench got whistled for a technical foul.

Providence senior Brad Koerner knocked down two free throws for the personal foul. Then Shahroudi hit one of the two technical foul shots to seal the win.

“We were very fortunate to win,” Pioneers’ coach Lou Lefevre said. “Ben Shahroudi probably played the best game of his career.”

MUSTANGS LOSE CONFERENCE OPENER

Visiting New Washington had no answer for Crothersville’s Gene Hodge on Tuesday. The senior guard scored a game-high 31 points to lead the Tigers (1-4, 1-1 Southern Athletic Conference) past the Mustangs, 55-50. It was New Washington’s SAC opener.

James Clemons paced the Mustangs with 18 points, while teammate Zach Moore recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. New Washington committed 21 turnovers.

“It was pretty frustrating,” Mustangs’ coach Jonathan May said. “We didn’t do anything great on the defensive end of the floor.”
