RICHMOND — Jeffersonville had one of its most dominating performances in school history with a 118-46 victory over Fox Creek Christian (Ky.) in the first round of Bob Wettig Memorial Tournament at the Tiernan Center at Richmond High School on Thursday.

The Red Devils shot 58 percent from the floor, including 61.4 percent in the first half, outrebounded Fox Creek 51-21, forced 32 turnovers and only gave the ball up five times themselves and outscored the Knights 48-3 on the fast break.

Fox Creek (4-4) plays mostly junior varsity competition in Kentucky and didn’t put up much of a fight.

“It’s a win,” is all first-year Jeffersonville head coach Matt Pait had to say about it.

“When we come into games like this, we just have to play our game,” Jeffersonville senior Keenan Williams said. “Obviously, [Fox Creek] isn’t as good as us, but we still have to stick to our stuff and get better.”

The 118 points are the most ever scored in the Wettig Tournament. The 72-point margin also was a record in the seven-year history of the tourney. The 118 points were the fifth-most in Jeffersonville basketball history.

“It’s pretty cool breaking records,” Williams said.

The Red Devils (5-1) controlled the game from the start, scoring the game’s first 12 points. Drew Ellis knocked down a pair of 3s and scored eight points, while Dionte Allen controlled the paint on both ends. The Devils led 33-6 after one quarter.

“I thought our guys played hard,” Pait said. “It was the first game that I thought we were able to get off to a good start — and we didn’t look back. Overall, our starters did a really good job.”

The Jeff junior varsity took over early in the second quarter and Fox Creek managed 15 of its 46 points in the second quarter. Still, Jeff outscored the Knights 34-15 in the period and led 67-21 at the break.

“I thought we got a little lazy at times on defense, but that’s the nature of those kinds of games,” Pait said.

The Devils outscored Fox Creek 51-25 in the second half as the junior varsity played most of the minutes. Sophomore Demarre Sims wound up leading the Devils with 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting. Freshman Michael Minton added 15 points on 7-of-13 from the floor. Jeff’s Tristan Kimbrough had 10 rebounds to lead all players.

“I thought our JV guys played really hard and played pretty well,” Pait praised.

“Our second string really stepped up tonight,” Williams added. “They played really well.”

The Red Devils will face Norwell (4-1), which defeated Greenfield-Central 81-50 in the opening round. With a win, they would likely face host Richmond, which is unbeaten and ranked seventh in Class 4A, in the semifinals.

“We’re here to win the tournament,” Pait said. “This was just one win — we still have three to go.”

Pait believes that resting his starters for most of Thursday’s win will help his team during the three-day, four-game Wetting Tournament format.

“Not playing until 7 o’clock [tonight] and being able to sit some of our guys [in the first round], that hopefully will help us out,” he said. “But it doesn’t matter how long we rest them if we don’t come out and play well and do our jobs the next game.”

“When we play against real good teams, we’ll need that rest,” Williams said. “We have to come out and play from the start. We want to knock them out in the first quarter, the first five, six minutes.”
