JEFFERSONVILLE — The Charlestown girls’ basketball team’s goal on Thursday night at Johnson Arena was to defeat Jeffersonville in back-to-back years for the first time since the Pirates beat the Red Devils four consecutive times from 1989-1992.

Jeff was not going to let that happen.

Senior guard Aurreeshae Hines scored a season-high 27 points to lead the Red Devils past Charlestown, 71-46. It was the second time this season that Jeff has tallied more than 70 points.

“In the second half, it was the best team effort we’ve had all season,” Jeff coach Mike Warren said. “Every time I looked up, somebody else was scoring. They were sharing it and making some great assists. It makes basketball so much more fun when you do it together.”

A huge second quarter enabled the Red Devils to take full control of the contest. They outscored the Pirates (8-3) 25-11 and forced Charlestown to commit seven turnovers.

Jeff concluded the stanza strong. Leading 43-39 midway through the third, the Devils went on a 13-1 run to go up 56-40.

“They got on a run and we didn’t stop it,” Pirates’ coach Michael Prichard said. “We talked to [the Pirates] about the runs they’ve made throughout the year. We talked about them not having any 20-point quarters as well. A few things happened, the ball didn’t bounce our way and it just kind of spiraled down.”

Warren credited Hines and senior reserve Makenzi Johnson for the big third quarter. Hines had eight points in the period, which included two 3-pointers. Johnson had seven points and hit a three of her own.

“In the third quarter, we kind of changed our approach a little bit,” Warren said. “Makenzi Johnson took a huge charge and that kind of switched the momentum. She hit a big 3 and Shae hit a couple. Once one went in, we just started hitting.”

The Red Devils (10-4) continued to roll at the start of the fourth, scoring the first eight points to go up 64-40.

Charlestown came out on fire at the start of the contest, pulling out to a 9-2 lead.

“I think they were focused. But I think they were battling a game within themselves,” Prichard said about his players. “We expected to do well against them. We didn’t expect to lose by the amount we lost by. We expected to do well. We’re not going to back down from teams.

“I think our girls will bounce back. It will be a learning experience.”

Hines shot 8 of 12 from the field, making all three of her 3-point attempts. She also was a perfect 8 of 8 from the free-throw line. Hines also had a game-high three steals.

“She did a good job of attacking early, and I think that opened up some things for other people,” Warren said.

Jeff junior Emily Gray tallied 16 points, shooting 8 of 10 from the floor, and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Johnson finished with 11 points.

Junior guard Kaitlynn Henning paced Charlestown with 18 points. She shot 6 of 10 from the field and an efficient 6 of 6 from the stripe. Teammate Justice Burdin had 10 points, a game-high eight rebounds and a game-high three blocked shots. Charlestown senior Megan Brooks chipped in nine points.

Jeff will host Castle on Saturday. Also on Saturday, Charlestown will travel to Brownstown Central for a big Mid-Southern Conference showdown.
