HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Jeff crushes Castle, 12-1

No. 2 Dragons continue to roll with 22-1 win over Southwestern

JEFFERSONVILLE — The Jeffersonville bats are suddenly alive.

After taking a couple of losses with a quiet offense, the Class 4A No. 3 Red Devil baseball team scored 14 runs in a five-inning 14-4 win over Jennings County on Thursday before beating Castle 12-1 in five innings on Friday.

Sophomore Drew Campbell went 2-for-4 with two runs and hit a two-run home run in the fifth to invoke the “mercy rule” on consecutive nights.

Jeffersonville belted 12 hits, including 10 singles, and seven different Red Devils had at least one hit. Campbell, Drew Ellis, Chandler Dale and Nolan Fertig — Thursday’s batting star — had two hits apiece. Fertig knocked in three runs and Miah Phelps, Dale and Fertig each scored a pair of runs in the victory.

The Jeff pitching also has been solid. On Friday, Ellis allowed just one hit — a single to Wyatt Daly in the fourth — in five innings. He struck out seven Knights and walked just two.

Game notes: The Class 3A No. 2 Dragons dominated the game by hitting the ball early and often against the Rebels, led by Cook’s 5-for-5 night, which included three extra-base hits — among them two home runs — and six runs knocked in.

Silver Creek assistant coach Scott Jennings: “Cook put on a clinic at the plate. He was 5-for-5 and hit seven or eight balls on the screws. Cody Razer and Braydon Ware also had good nights at the plate. Southwestern is very young and we have some older kids that just overpowered them.”

    Records: Silver Creek 3-2.
