ROUNDUP: Borden softball in SAC driver’s seat

Providence softball comes from behind to beat Presentation in extra innings

INDIANAPOLIS — In just the fourth year of its program, Borden softball took a major step toward its first Southern Athletic Conference championship on Thursday.

With a 10-9 victory over Henryville, the Braves are 3-0 in SAC play. They need one win over either South Central or New Washington to claim a share of the league crown. Two wins would give them the title outright.

“If we’re able to go on and be conference champions, I think that would be good for the girls,” Borden coach Alex Knerr said. “I think it would be a major confidence booster for my girls.”

Three pitches into the contest, Borden (11-3) had bases loaded en route to a two-run first inning. The Braves never trailed despite a first-inning home run from Emily Hollis — the Hornets’ 16th homer of the season.

“I told them before the game that it was important to get a good start against a competitive team,” Knerr said. “They did really well.”

Borden increased the lead to 8-1 in the fourth before a Henryville rally. The Hornets (14-6, 4-1 SAC) got within a run in the seventh and had bases loaded, but they couldn’t get the tying run across the plate.

Shelbie Farvour went 2-for-4 with a homer and a double for Borden, which hosts Madison Shawe tonight. The Braves’ Paige Schindler was 4-for-4 at the plate and struck out five in the pitcher’s circle. Teammate Riley Schindler went 3-for-4 and scored three times.

Audrey VanMeter reached base four times and scored twice for the Hornets, who are off until they host Salem on Tuesday and go to Clarksville on Wednesday. Henryville pitcher Ashtyn Kaskie took the loss, but went 2-for-4 and scored twice in the loss.
