Jeff still looking for new boys’ coach

New AD Satterly says search committee trying to find right fit for JHS

JEFFERSONVILLE — The first day for students at Jeffersonville High School is two weeks from today.

And new Jeff athletic director Todd Satterly is still looking for a new coach for the school’s tradition-rich boys’ basketball program.

The Red Devil coaching post became open on June 18 when former Jeff coach Chad Gilbert accepted the athletic director position at Charlestown High School, his alma mater.

In a phone interview on Wednesday evening, Satterly said the search committee for the new coach, which includes himself, has conducted several formal and informal interviews with candidates. However, the right person to become the 24th Red Devil boys’ basketball coach has yet to be found.

“Obviously, the quicker we can find a coach, the better. But we want to make sure that we’ve got the right candidate for Jeff,” said Satterly, who gave no timetable when a new coach will be hired. “We’re definitely still in the process. We’re looking at everybody’s credentials and we want to get the best hire for Jeff.”

Despite not hiring a new coach yet, Satterly said the search committee is not stressing to bring someone in right away.

“We’re not in panic stage,” Satterly said. “We’d like to have somebody hired right now. But we want to find the right fit.”

Satterly said there have been 35 applicants for the job. Along with candidates from Indiana, the applicants have come from several states like Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Kentucky and Ohio.

Satterly says the search committee is looking for several qualities in a coach.

“It’s more than hiring a basketball coach,” Satterly said. “It’s somebody that knows our community and knows Indiana basketball. It’s more than just wins and losses.

“We’re looking for somebody who can give us some longevity. We want someone who wants to be here for 10, 15, 20 years.”

A special meeting of the Greater Clark Community Schools board of trustees has been set for Tuesday, where there is a possibility a candidate for the Jeff coaching job could be presented to the board.

The new coach will have some big shoes to fill in succeeding Gilbert.

In his two seasons as Jeff boys’ coach, Gilbert compiled a winning percentage of 84.6 percent (44-8), which was the highest in program history. He led the Red Devils to two sectional championships and a regional crown this past season. Gilbert also guided Jeff to back-to-back undefeated Hoosier Hills Conference titles, which had never happened in Red Devil history.

Prior to becoming the boys’ coach, Gilbert became the all-time winningest coach in Jeff girls’ basketball history. He had a 220-43 record in his 11 season as the Red Devil girls’ boss.

Gilbert’s biggest accomplishment came in 2011 when he led the Jeff girls to the Class 4A state championship.
