• New Albany downs Creek: New Albany improved its pool play record to 2-0 on Saturday with a 14-4 win in four innings over Silver Creek. New Albany got off to a fast start, scoring nine runs on nine hits in the first.
Maddox Schmelz led New Albany with a 2-for-2 performance, which included a double, two runs scored and two RBIs. Schmelz also pitched in relief of New Albany starter Liam McCauley in the top of the fourth, striking out all three batters he faced.
New Albany’s Garrett Jones was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs. David Krebs also went 2-for-3. McCauley gave up all four Creek runs in the third and allowed just one hit for the game.
“I thought we played real well,” New Albany manager Richard Chandler said. “We jumped on them early and put them in a hole right off the bat.”
New Albany will face Highlander Youth Recreation at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. Silver Creek (1-1) will play Jeff at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
• Jeff/GRC thumps Clarksville: Jeff evened its pool play record at 1-1 by downing Clarksville in five innings on Saturday, 11-1.
Jeff’s Drew Gerritsen went 2-for-2 with a double and three runs scored, while teammate Jaden Hart was 2-for-2 with a double and one run scored.
Jeff’s Xavier Hart had a 2-for-3 game with a double and two RBIs. Teammate Eli Evans forced the 10-run mercy rule in the bottom of the fifth with a solo homer for his only hit of the contest.
Jeff starter Alex Wright got the victory, allowing one run on one hit in three innings of work. Xavier Hart pitched the final two frames, striking out five of the six batters he faced.
“Our pitchers did an outstanding job,” Jeff manager Rick Kelley said. “Our bats were alive. Everybody contributed and it was a great team win.”
Clarksville (0-2) got only one hit, which came from Caleb Cummings.
Jeff will square off against Silver Creek at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Clarksville will take on Charlestown at 8 p.m. on Tuesday.
