PRO BASEBALL: Bats fall short to Gwinnett, 5-1

Louisville loses on Southern Indiana Night

LOUISVILLE — Seeking to earn their sixth consecutive home win, the Louisville Bats fell short to the Gwinnett Braves 5-1 on Friday at Louisville Slugger Field. It was Southern Indiana Night at Slugger Field, which was sponsored by the News and Tribune.

A four-run second inning and one-run third for Gwinnett gave the Braves the early 5-0 lead that they would hold for the remainder of the game.

A lineup that excluded two of Louisville’s offensive leaders in Felix Perez and Ruben Gotay, the Bats were unable to generate an offensive spark, recording only five hits and scoring one run off of Thomas Neal’s solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Gotay entered the game as a pinch hitter in the bottom of the eighth, reaching base safely on a walk.

As a team, Louisville struck out 12 times on the night, only three shy of its season-high when the Bats struck out 15 times at Rochester on May 1.

Making his third start of the season, Bats right-handed pitcher Jair Jurrjens (1-2, 4.76 ERA) suffered the loss and allowed five runs on nine hits with two walks and three strikeouts. In his last two starts, Jurrjens has permitted 10 runs on 15 hits with five walks and seven strikeouts.

Opposing him on the mound for the Braves, right-hander pitcher Alex Wood delivered 3 2/3 shutout innings and allowed only two hits with two walks and five strikeouts. He exited the game after throwing only 58 pitches, 34 of which were for strikes.

Factoring into the decision and earning the win for the Braves, right-hander Kameron Loe (1-1, 5.59) hurled 3 1/3 innings and allowed one run on three hits, walking none and striking out four.

Louisville looks to even its record once again at .500 tonight when right-handed pitcher Chien-Ming Wang (6-5) will face Gwinnett right-hander Cody Martin (4-5) at 6:05 at Louisville Slugger Field.
