NASCAR NATIONWIDE SERIES: Silver Creek grad 33rd at Phoenix

Kimmel runs first of five NNS races

AVONDALE, Ariz. — In his second NASCAR Nationwide Series start of his career, Silver Creek graduate Will Kimmel finished 33rd in the Blue Jeans Go Green 200 at Phoenix International Raceway on Saturday.

The 200-lap race ended with 32 laps to go because of rain.

Kimmel started 26th in the No. 44 Toyota Camry, owned by Mooresville, N.C.-based TriStar Motorsports. The Sellersburg resident raced 117 of the 168 completed laps. During the first quarter of the race, he had to go to the garage to get repairs on his car’s transmission and lost several laps.

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series drivers swept the top five spots. Kyle Busch won the race, followed by Kevin Harvick, Brad Keselowski, Kyle Larson and Matt Kenseth, respectively.

Saturday’s race was the first of five Nationwide Series events Kimmel is scheduled to run this season for TriStar Motorsports. His next Nationwide Series race will be on Saturday, March 15 at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway.

Kimmel is a full-time driver in the ARCA Racing Series for Clarksville-based Kimmel Racing. His next ARCA race will be Saturday, March 22 at Mobile (Ala.) International Speedway. Kimmel is the nephew of 10-time ARCA series champion and Clarksville native Frank Kimmel.
