FLOYDS KNOBS —  As expected from the beginning, Jeffersonville will meet the host Highlanders in Saturday’s Class 2A Floyd Central Sectional championship.

Floyd opened Wednesday’s semifinals with a 3-0 victory over rival New Albany. That was followed by the Red Devils’ 7-1 triumph over Silver Creek.

Jeff beat the Highlanders 9-2 last Wednesday, but both teams expect a more tightly contest on Saturday.

“I know how good they can be,” Jeff coach Carson Webb said of the Highlanders. “I’m expecting a much better game. We’re not overconfident because we know how good they are. I think in the regular-season game, everything was going right for us and everything went wrong for them.”

“I would expect our boys to play better this go-round,” Floyd Central first-year coach Tim Rice said.

Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.

FLOYD CENTRAL 3, NEW ALBANY 0

As seems to happen every year, New Albany came to play in the sectional.

The Bulldogs were even with Floyd for the first 39-plus minutes.

“That’s because [New Albany coach] Dutch [Vigar] is a fantastic coach,” Rice said. “He gets his team ready for the tournament.”

With 39 seconds left in the opening half, Floyd senior Zach Lewis was fouled in the box on a controversial call. Lewis took the penalty kick and knocked it home.

The Highlanders had a 1-0 lead and all of the momentum going into the second half.

“That definitely shifted the momentum in our direction,” Rice said. “It was an even match in the first half up to that. That put us in a good position.”

“That completely changed how the rest of the game played out,” Lewis added. “It made New Albany have to play more aggressive and it gave us opportunities to put them away in the second half.”

That’s exactly what the Highlanders did.

Just 52 seconds into the second half, Henok Jones tapped a through ball to Sean Brown. Brown just beat New Albany keeper Ryan Castleberry to the ball and snuck it by him for a 2-0 lead.

Five minutes later, Lewis put the game away with his second goal when he headed in a perfect 25-yard pass from Brown.

JEFFERSONVILLE 7, SILVER CREEK 1

Isaiah Salazar scored a pair of goals and five other Red Devils got on the board as Jeff rolled to a semifinal victory.

Erick Martinez had three assists for Jeff, which improved to 15-2-2 with the victory.

Ben Mann got the Devils on the board early with a breakaway goal seven minutes into the contest. Fifteen minutes later, Austin Ali made it 2-0. Salazar followed with his first goal at the 29-minute mark to give the Devils a 3-0 halftime lead.

Dylan Stinson made it 4-0 on an assist from Alex Duckworth before Silver Creek’s Alan Cruz scored the Dragons’ lone goal in the 54th minute.

Salazar’s second made it 5-1 before goals by Brandan Diteresa and Parrish Brown capped the scoring in the final eight minutes.
