H.S. BASKETBALL: Clarksville, Providence split doubleheader

Generals boys beat Pioneers for second time, 41-32

CLARKSVILLE — PIONEER GIRLS TAKE CITY CHAMPIONSHIP

The Pioneers (11-3) had little trouble defeating the Generals (3-11) in the early matchup. With the win, Providence guaranteed its first .500 back-to-back seasons in 11 years.

“That’s good, but that’s not our ultimate goal,” Providence coach Brad Burden said. “We knew we were going to have a pretty talented team this season, so we knew this could happen. But there’s a lot of basketball left and we want to keep getting better.”

Providence escaped with a 53-50 win over the Generals in the Charlestown Holiday Tournament semifinals on Jan. 3. But there weren’t any struggles on Friday as the visitors jumped on the hosts from the opening tip and cruised to the win.

According to Burden, his squad shot measurably better on Friday night than it did last week, and he felt Friday night’s effort was more representative of their level of play.

“Our defensive intensity was up and down, but we rebound a lot better and made a lot of shots,” Burden said.

Providence freshman Claire Rauck led all scorers with 20 points and was named the MVP of the contest for the Pioneers. Senior center Haley Jenkins led the Generals with 13 points and notched MVP honors for the Generals.

Providence travels to New Washington on Tuesday night, while Clarksville also hits the road to hit Salem the same night.
