HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Borden sweeps Hornets 5-0 in SAC tennis

Pioneers come through in extra-inning softball victory

HENRYVILLE — Borden earned five straight-set victories to sweep Henryville 5-0 in Southern Athletic Conference tennis action on Friday.

In singles, Abby Ellis defeated Sarah Hunt 6-1 and 6-0, Sarah Hurst topped Shelby Sinn 6-2, 6-0 and Kendyl Wheatly took down Natalie Bobay 6-0, 6-2.

In the doubles’ event, Paige Kruer and Morgan Mast earned a 6-0, 7-5 victory over Alicia Lindley and Sarah Johnson, while Bailee Kruer and Mckenzie Owens had little trouble in a 6-3, 6-2 win over Marisa Thomasson and Kendra Tanner.

“Tonight, I feel we played well,” Henryville coach Brian Consley said. “However, we simply got beat by a better team. Borden is very well coached. [Braves coach Ross Shauver] does a great job with his girls. They came out and put us in a hole and we couldn’t dig out.”

NEXT: Borden at Paoli, Monday; Henryville (3-3) at Madison Shawe, Thursday.

• Eagles beat Clarksville, 4-1: Austin defeated Clarksville 4-1 in a Mid-Southern Conference match on Thursday.

Clarksville’s lone win came from Abigail Hurtgen at No. 3 singles. She beat Rachel Bekika 6-4, 6-1.

Both Generals’ doubles teams pushed the Eagles to three sets before suffering setbacks.

NEXT: Clarksville at Providence, Monday at Community Park in New Albany.


• Pioneers come through in clutch: After being tied at 1-1 through eight innings, Class 2A No. 2 Paoli scored a run to take a lead into the bottom of the ninth Friday at Providence.

The Class 2A No. 7 Pioneers responded with two runs in the bottom of the second extra inning to take a big 3-2 win over the sectional-rival Rams.

Sierra Collett opened the ninth with a single and Charly Wolford followed with a bunt single. With one out, Morgan Boone’s single scored pinch-runner Jacklyn Endris with the tying run. The next batter, Meredith Endris drove the ball into center field, scoring pinch-runner Riley Lovan with the game-winning run.

Endris was also the winning pitcher. Both runs scored against her were unearned and she struck out 11 Rams.

On Friday, the Pioneers beat Switzerland County 10-0 in five innings. Meredith Endris went 4 for 4, while Collett was the winning pitcher and had a double.

NEXT: Providence (10-4) at New Albany, Tuesday.

• New Wash beats Scottsburg: Whitney Morris gave up just two hits and struck out 14 and Brooke Shawe had a double and a home run as New Washington defeated Scottsburg 6-1 on Friday.

Kayla Sexton added three doubles for the Mustangs, who scored three runs in the third inning and three more in the fifth.
