TUESDAY HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Creek girls capture Dragon Invite title

Borden boys finish second, Braves’ Magallanes places first

SELLERSBURG —  The Silver Creek girls’ cross country team protected its home course on Tuesday at Silver Creek Primary School by winning the Silver Creek Dragon Invitational with 61 points.

The Dragons had three runners finish in the top 10. Juniors Maggie Shields placed third, Mackenzie Crouch wound up fifth and Jessica Backherms was 10th. Rounding out the Silver Creek scoring were Brittany Sharp in 16th and Sandy Wagner in 18th.

“The girls again proved to be up to the challenge to win the invitational,” Dragons’ coach Darrell Kingery said. “We continue to get better even though we have not had one race where everyone ran well on the same day. Hopefully, we will be able to do that when the time is right. But for right now, we will celebrate an outstanding team effort.”

Charlestown ended up fifth, followed by Jeffersonville and Henryville. Hornet senior Sadie Spears ran second in the girls’ race, 11 seconds behind winner Ashton Bosler from North Harrison. New Washington freshman Olivia Graebe ended up seventh, and Pirate junior Whitney Andrews was eighth.

The Borden boys’ team finished second with 91 points. Silver Creek placed fourth, followed by Henryville in fifth.

Brave sophomore Julien Magallanes won the race in a time of 16:13. Henryville’s Jacob Hedrick placed fifth, while Home School Union’s Michael Sheets finished 12th.

Borden’s Nathen Magallanes placed 15th, followed by Silver Creek’s Tanner Coots, the Braves’ George Tipker, the Dragons’ Dalton Terry and Borden’s Gavin Tipker.

“I thought our boys ran hard and fourth for us right now is very good,” Kingery said. “We are a little beat up with injuries, but many of the guys stepped up and got the job done. If we can get healthy, we can be a major factor come sectional time.”
