H.S. GIRLS' BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Jeff beats No. 5 Madison, 42-36

Devils move into second in HHC, help BNL clinch another league crown

MADISON — After being tied at halftime, Jeffersonville’s girls’ basketball team pulled away from Class 3A No. 5 Madison on Thursday at Salm Gymnasium to earn a 42-36 victory. The Red Devils move into a second-place tie in the Hoosier Hills Conference with the Cubs.

The win also helped Class 4A No. 2 and defending state champion Bedford North Lawrence clinch its third straight conference championship.

Haley Vogen led the Red Devils with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Aurreeshae Hines added 11 points, including three 3-pointers in the victory.

Whitney Wynn led the Cubs with 10 points. Macky Hecox added nine in the defeat.

Jeffersonville (14-5, 4-2 HHC) will host Seymour on Tuesday. The Owls are a half-game behind Jeff and Madison after a 63-55 win over New Albany on Thursday.

BRAVES RIP SHOALS

Class A No. 11 Borden improved to 13-2 overall with an easy 50-33 victory over Shoals on Thursday.

The visiting Braves used an 18-5 advantage in the second quarter for a 28-10 halftime lead and cruised to their fifth win in six games.

“We got out to a good lead early and spread playing time around,” Borden coach Terry Rademacher said.

Abby Ellis had a game-high 16 points for the Braves. Carson Casey added 12 and Taylor Streander finished with nine in the triumph.

MUSTANGS WIN SECOND STRAIGHT

New Washington won its second Southern Athletic Conference contest in three days with an easy 47-32 win over visiting Lanesville on Thursday.

The Mustangs (9-8, 2-2 SAC) ran out to a 19-2 lead after one quarter and a 23-9 halftime advantage.

Once again, New Wash was led by Ashley Johnson, who finished with 18 points. Courtney Amick added 11 in the victory.
