BASEBALL: Pioneers’ season ends with 4-3 loss in 2A regional semi on Monday

Providence commits four errors to finish season 18-9

HUNTINGBURG — The Providence baseball team’s season came to an end on Monday evening in a 4-3 loss to Eastern Greene in the Class 2A Southridge Regional semifinals at historic League Stadium.

The Pioneers (18-9) scored the game’s first run in the top of the first inning when Tyler Simms smacked a single into center field to knock in Ben Shahroudi.

But the Thunderbirds (18-7) answered in the bottom half of the frame with three runs to take the lead for good at 3-1. During the inning, Eastern Greene had three infield hits, drew two walks from Providence starting pitcher Cristian Ensley and took advantage of two Pioneer errors. For the game, Providence committed four errors.

The Pioneers pulled within one run of the Thunderbirds in the top of the third. Providence’s Andrew Hunt started the frame with a triple to center, and then came home on a wild pitch.

But in the bottom of the third, Eastern Greene got its lead back to two runs when it scored on another Pioneer miscue.

Providence got a run in the top of the fifth to trim its deficit to 4-3. With the bases loaded, Simms plated Shahroudi from third base with a deep sacrifice fly to center.

The Pioneers’ final serious scoring threat was in the top of the sixth. They got runners on second and third with one out. But it ended when Shahroudi lined out and Hunt grounded out to first.

Providence says goodbye to eight seniors in Ensley, Hunt, Nick Campbell, Jon Davis, Ben Katchur, George Knott, Aaron Patterson and Justin Starr.

Eastern Greene lost the regional championship on Tuesday in six innings to South Spencer, 12-2.
