H.S. ROUNDUP: Generals pay back Mustangs, 9-2

Clarksville’s Sharp strikes out 16

NEW WASHINGTON — On the strength of sophomore pitcher Bailey Sharp’s arm, the Clarksville softball team paid back one of the squads that handed it one of its most disappointing losses of the 2013 season on Monday.

Sharp struck out a season-high 16 batters to lead the Generals past host New Washington, 9-2. In a complete-game outing, Sharp allowed five hits, walked one and hit one batter. Both Mustang runs she allowed were earned.

“It was a pretty good outing for her. She’s starting to come around,” Clarksville coach Tim Hauber said.

Sharp also helped herself at the plate. She went 2-for-4 with a double. Also for the Generals, junior Kayla Wallace went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and freshman Kaitlin Page came home twice.

“Last year, we fooled around and let New Washington come back and beat us, so this is one of the losses we avenged from last year. We’re starting to come around,” Hauber said.

The Mustangs’ two runs came in the bottom of the sixth inning. With two out, Gracie Speigelhalder and Jodi Davidson each got RBI singles.

New Washington pitcher Brooke Shaw suffered the loss. The junior got no support from her defense, as the Mustangs committed eight errors.

Clarksville visits Corydon Central today. New Washington will travel to Jeffersonville on Wednesday.
