H.S. ROUNDUP: Highlanders sweep New Albany, 5-0

Miller praises FC’s aggressiveness in win

FLOYDS KNOBS — As of late, veteran Floyd Central girls’ tennis coach Rick Miller has been asking his players to play with more enthusiasm and passion.

On Monday at the Floyd Central courts, the 16th-ranked Highlanders showed they have been listening to the Hall of Fame mentor.

Floyd Central dropped just eight games in sweeping archrival New Albany, 5-0.

The Highlanders only lost three games in singles action. At the No. 1 spot, junior Giorgia Rossetto breezed past the Bulldogs’ Anne Mattox, 6-0, 6-0. At No. 2, Floyd Central’s Dana Frank beat Lauren Hoffer, 6-1, 6-0. Alexis Applegate completed the singles sweep with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph at three singles over New Albany’s Bayasa Batsaikhan.

The Highlanders’ No. 1 doubles team of Alex Jamison and Erin Patterson defeated Racquel Burch and Ashley Fulmer, 6-0, 6-1. At No. 2 doubles, Kailyn Little and Emily Stock knocked off the Bulldog tandem of Rachel Johnson and Megha Dhanapal, 6-1, 6-3.

“I’ve been talking to the girls about being more aggressive and playing with more enthusiasm,” Miller said. “I’ve been trying to get them to play with more passion, and I think we were more aggressive tonight. I’m pleased that our girls picked it up a little bit tonight. We had more concentration.”

Floyd Central (5-3) will vie for its fifth consecutive title in the Crawfordsville Invitational on Saturday. But a tough field, which includes No. 4 Indianapolis Cathedral and No. 21 Penn, awaits the Highlanders.

“This tournament is going to be a benchmark for us,” Miller said. “If we come close to winning it this weekend, it would be a big boost. We need to get a confidence boost. We need to get better.”

New Albany will visit Paoli on Thursday.
