HIGH SCHOOL BOYS' BASKETBALL: Connell expected to become new Charlestown coach

Greater Clark board to vote on current Clarksville coach’s fate tonight

> SOUTHERN INDIANA — According to multiple sources, the Greater Clark Community Schools board is expected to approve Clarksville High School head boys’ basketball coach Jason Connell as the new head boys’ coach at Charlestown High School at tonight’s board meeting.

If the board votes in favor of Connell, he would replace former Pirates’ head coach Sean Smith, who resigned to become the new head boys’ coach at West Washington several weeks ago.

Connell declined to comment on his possible hiring at Charlestown during a phone conversation Tuesday evening.

Connell took over as the Generals’ boss midway through the 2010-11 season. Since his arrival, he led Clarksville to one of the most successful stretches in program history.

Connell’s record with the Generals is 65-18. After guiding Clarksville to six victories in their 12 games of the 2010-11 season, they went 18-3 during the 2011-12 campaign and shared the Mid-Southern Conference title with Brownstown Central and Silver Creek.

In 2012-13, Connell led Clarksville to an 18-6 mark and won its first-ever Class 2A sectional championship. It also was the Generals’ first sectional title since 1986.

Last season, Clarksville posted a 23-3 mark and shared the MSC title for the second time in three seasons. This time the Generals owned a piece of the crown with Brownstown and Corydon Central.

Clarksville proceeded to win the Class 2A sectional championship for the second year in a row. It was the first time the Generals have repeated as sectional champions since 1978 and 1979.

Clarksville then won its first regional title in program history, as it won two overtime games to capture the Class 2A Southridge Regional championship. The Generals defeated MSC rival Austin in the semifinals (49-45) and then Linton-Stockton in the championship (42-36).

Clarksville’s season ended during its first-ever semistate appearance. The Generals lost to eventual Class 2A state champion Indianapolis Park Tudor at Seymour’s Scott Gym, 76-64.

Connell has been named the News and Tribune Area Coach of the Year two of the last three seasons, including last year. He guided the Generals to Silver Creek Holiday Tournament titles last season and in the 2011-12 campaign.

Plus in his Clarksville tenure, he owns a 5-3 record over archrival Providence. The Generals have won their last four meetings with the Pioneers, which includes three victories last season.

Connell is familiar with the Charlestown boys’ basketball program. Prior to coaching at Clarksville, he was an assistant coach at Charlestown from 2006-2011 under Smith.

Connell has been a teacher at Charlestown Middle School the past several years.
