DISTRICT 5 ROUNDUP: New Albany 9-10s beats Jeff, 14-3

NA 11-year-old blast HYR, 14-4

CLARKSVILLE — New Albany’s 9-10-year-old baseball stars improved to 4-0 and earned the top seed in the elimination portion of the Minor League tournament with a 14-3 victory over rival Jeff/GRC on Saturday at Clarksville Little League.

New Albany scored three times in the first inning, seven in the second and four in the third to wrap up pool play. It will play Silver Creek in Monday’s first semifinal, while 2-2 Jeff will face No. 2-seed Highlander Youth Recreation in the second semi.

Maddux Schmelz earned the win on the mound and went 3-for-3 with three runs and an RBI at the plate for New Albany. Max Beatty had a double and a triple, Davis Krebs hit a double and Tucker Biven went 1-for-1, drew a pair of walks and scored three times in the win.

For Jeff, Jaden Hart had two RBIs, Alex Kelley scored a run and Derek Leanhart had an RBI in the team’s three-run fourth inning. New Albany pitching held GRC to three hits.



• New Albany wins big: Eleven of the 13 New Albany All-Stars reached base as it ran past HYR 14-4 on Saturday.

New Albany scored eight times in the second inning and six in the third to earn a 10-run rule victory.

Nick Sexton led the New Albany offense with three hits. Ray Reisinge, Jason Murphy, Caleb Doss, Jericho Brooks and Weston Kaiser had two hits apiece in the victory. Sexton, Reisinger and Doss split duties on the mound.

“Today was just an all-around team effort with everyone contributing,” New Albany manager Kurt Meyer said.

 10-11 baseball — Championship — Jeff/GRC vs. New Albany, 6:30 p.m.

Wednesday, July 16

 13-14 baseball — Championship, 6:30 p.m.

   9-10 baseball — Championship, 7 p.m.
