Brownstown Central has dominated Mid-Southern Conference volleyball like few teams have dominated a conference.
The Braves have won every MSC title since 1989.
However, after a 26-24, 25-14, 25-22 upset of the Class 3A No. 7 Braves, Silver Creek is currently sitting in the MSC driver’s seat.
“I told the girls that we still have some work to do [to win the league crown],” Dragons’ coach Jeff Zimmerman said. “North Harrison has a very good team and Corydon Central has a very good team.”
The win over the Braves is the first in the seven-year Zimmerman era.
“We’ve taken them to four sets a couple times — never even to five — but they stepped up,” Zimmerman said. “Going in we felt like we had an opportunity and the girls got the job done.”
The Dragons trailed 23-20 in the first set before scoring six of the final seven points to take control.
“The girls fought back and showed a little heart and finished,” Zimmerman said. “That’s what we’ve been preaching all year long: We need to finish against these good teams.”
Liz Mann had a big night for the Dragons with 10 kills, five digs and four aces. Kendra Kirchgessner had seven kills, two blocks and a service ace, Danni Densford added seven kills and three blocks, Morgan Reining finished with eight kills, nine digs and a pair of aces and Kaitlyn Ramser had 29 assists and eight digs.
Zimmerman knows his team will likely see the Braves again. Brownstown has won 16 straight sectional crowns and won’t give up its title easily.
“We know we’ll need to be ready to come to play at sectional time,” Zimmerman said. “They’ll want some revenge and that’s the big one.”
