In a game where the first three quarters were dominated by mistakes, Silver Creek put it together in the fourth quarter for a 21-14 victory over Eastern.
Trailing 8-7 at halftime and with both teams going scoreless in the third quarter, Silver Creek got it going when the Dragons’ Drew Sherrow intercepted an Jordan Eberle pass, giving Silver Creek the ball on their 24-yard line.
One play earlier, the Dragons, Bobby Haines fumbled the ball away, giving it to the Musketeers.
This time Silver Creek (2-2, 1-2 MSC) put together its best drive of the night, going 76 yards in nine plays with quarterback Brooks Howell throwing a 9-yard touchdown pass to Haines.
Howell then ran for the conversion to give the Dragons a 15-8 lead.
After forcing Eastern (1-3, 1-2) to punt Silver Creek was on the board again — this time quickly — as Brad Graham broke loose for 62 yards and a touchdown. The conversion kick failed, leaving the Dragons’ on top 21-8.
Eastern made it interesting as it drove 68 yards in four plays with the big one coming on a 50-yard pass completion from Roberts to Scot Ames. Too many men on the field and a personal foul by Silver Creek gave Eastern a first down at the two. Two plays later, Roberts took it in from the one to make it 21-14 after the two point conversion pass failed.
Everyone in Sellersburg knew that Eastern was going to attempt an onside kick. The Musketeers had been successful with one to start the game. This one failed to go the required ten yards and the Dragons took over and with only 1:09 left and were able to take a knee and run out the clock.
“They finally got together and were ready to go. They played some hard-nosed football in the second half,” Silver Creek coach Mike Donahue said of his Dragons.
In a first half dominated by mistakes, penalties and turnovers, Silver Creek got on the board as Haines broke loose on a 52-yard run with 7:56 remaining in the second quarter.
Eastern got on the board late in the half on a drive that included a 25-yard run by Coty Estes. Roberts threw a 33-yard touchdown pass to Nick Jenkins. Roberts then threw to Jordan Eberle for the 2-point conversion to put the Musketeers up 8-7 at halftime.
“I [went for two] hoping to change the momentum,” Eastern coach John Dablow said. “I knew we would get the ball to start the second half — maybe we could do something.”
It didn’t work. The Dragons blocked a punt on the first series after halftime, and according to Coach Donahue, being down a point going into the lockerroom may have helped his team.
“I used that as motivation at halftime,” Donahue said.
Silver Creek will host 3-1 Charlestown, which beat North Harrison 28-14, next Friday. On the same night, the Musketeers host unbeaten Corydon Central, which earned a 34-14 victory over Clarksville on Friday.
