Borden sweeps SAC All-Sports trophies

New Wash’s Morris named top SAC softball player

> SOUTHERN INDIANA — It was quite a year for Borden athletics.

On Wednesday it was announced that both the Braves boys and girls earned Southern Athletic Conference All-Sports trophies for the year.

The Borden girls won SAC cross country and tennis titles to edge Lanesville by a half-point for the girls trophy. The Borden boys took SAC titles in cross country, track and basketball to easily beat South Central for the all-sports honor. The Borden cross country team went on to win its first sectional in school history, its track and field squad finished second in the Floyd Central Sectional for the first time and, of course, its basketball team won the school’s first state title in March.

New Washington’s girls, who captured the basketball conference title and tied Henryville and Lanesville for the softball crown, finished third. Henryville’s girls, who won the track championship, was fourth. On the boys’ side, Henryville was fourth, including a golf title, and New Wash finished fifth.

Also on Wednesday, All-SAC softball and baseball teams were named. New Washington’s Whitney Morris was named the SAC’s Most Outstanding Player. She was joined on the all-conference squad by teammates Kayla Sexton, Brooke Shaw and Coari Robertson. Henryville’s Emily Hollis, Sierra Elifrits and Ashtyn Kaskie and Borden’s Kristen Nestor were also honored as first-team members.

Henryville coach Jenny Schroeder shared Coach of the Year honors with Lanesville’s Rusty Cecil. It is the sixth time in the last seven years that Schroeder earned the honor. Cecil was also named last year’s top coach.

South Central swept the honors in baseball with Jason Boston being named Most Outstanding Player and Brian McKnight winning the top coaching honor. Four Rebels made the first team.

Those four are joined by Henryville’s Cody Reister and Dakota Harrell, Borden’s Garrett Vick and Kyle Kruer and New Wash’s Cory Snider.
