H.S. FOOTBALL: Jeff rolls up 60 points again in win at BNL

BEDFORD — Even though his team stayed undefeated on Friday night at BNL Field, Jeffersonville football coach Lonnie Oldham was not completely happy with the Red Devils’ 60-0 victory over Bedford North Lawrence.

But he will take it, especially when it is a Hoosier Hills Conference road game.

“There are many things to work on. But I tell you what — winning at Bedford is big,” said Oldham, who guided Jeff to its first shutout win

in four years and its first blanking of the Stars (0-3, 0-1 HHC) since 2007.

For the third consecutive contest, Jeff running back Austin Hines had another stellar performance.

The senior rushed for 236 yards on 26 carries along with two receptions for 27 yards. Hines also had five touchdowns — four on the ground and one through the air. Hines already has 15 touchdowns this season, with 14 of them being rushing touchdowns.

“He’s just a special player. We’ve got to feed him the ball,” Oldham said. “I think with our offensive pace, you obviously saw them get way tired. When teams get real tired, you can do anything on offense.”

It was the third consecutive game where Jeff scored at least 60 points. It is the first time in program history that the Red Devils have tallied 60-plus points in three straight contests.

Hines’ first touchdown came near the end of the opening quarter. On first-and-goal, Hines ran into the end zone from 6 yards out to put the Red Devils up 7-0.

Jeff senior tight end Dionte Allen set up the score when he made a diving 16-yard catch from quarterback Jamal Britt on fourth-and-5. After the Jeff defense forced the Stars to turn the ball over on downs early in the second quarter, Hines collected his second TD of the night.

The Red Devils used eight plays on a 73-yard scoring drive, as Hines capped it off with a 5-yard touchdown reception from Britt at the 4:45 mark of the second period.

Britt made two key completions during the possession. He completed a 47-yard strike to sophomore Isaiah Blanton, followed by a 23-yard toss to Allen.

Hines put Jeff up 21-0 with 2:09 left in the first half with a 23-yard TD scamper to complete a brief four-play drive. The Red Devils needed only 1 minute and 52 seconds to reach the end zone in the second half. On fourth-and-goal, Allen snagged a 5-yard pass from Britt to give Jeff a 28-0 advantage.

An interception by defensive lineman Evan Hickerson set up the Red Devils’ next score.

Jeff marched 80 yards on seven plays, which was capped off by a 3-yard TD run by Hines with 2:05 left in the third. The Stars blocked the extra-point attempt by Jeff place-kicker Joseph Simmons, giving the Red Devils a 34-0 lead.

Hines’ final touchdown came on the first play of the fourth period. On first-and-10, Hines darted the up the middle with a 45-yard run at the 11:50 mark to extend the Jeff lead to 41 points. Allen had his second TD of the night with a 4-yard scoring run with 9:38 remaining in the regulation to give the Red Devils a 47-0 advantage.

Jeff’s Isaiah Mack got his third touchdown of the season with 6:09 left on a 22-yard run.

The defense got the final Red Devil score with 3:19 left when sophomore Anthony Southers recovered a fumble and returned the ball 25 yards to the end zone.

Despite the win, Oldham said his players had a lackluster first quarter and committed 12 penalties for 85 yards.

“We didn’t play well at all in the first half. It was like pulling teeth,” Oldham said. “We didn’t have a good week of practice either. I told them to bring their combat boots on Monday because we’ve got a lot of work to do.

“It’s one of the best teams I’ve had and they know that and I tell them that. But we’ve got a lot of work to do. We’ve got to clean up a lot of mistakes we’ve been making and those have been happening in practice. We’ve got to practice a lot better and continue to get better. But, hey, I’m glad we won tonight.”

Britt was 16-of-25 passing for 297 yards and two touchdown passes. Allen ended up with seven receptions for 88 yards, while Blanton had three catches for 53 yards.

The Red Devils will visit Madison next Friday.
