H.S. ROUNDUP: Borden boys, Creek girls win West Clark meet

Henryville’s Spears, Greene 1-2 in girls’ race

• Pioneers blank South Central:
Visiting Providence swept South Central 5-0 to begin its season Tuesday. The Pioneers won all 10 sets and dropped just seven games in the match.

“We looked good for our first match of the season,” Pioneer coach Scott Gurgol said. “It was not perfect. But for a first match, you just want to see your players doing the things we work on and discuss in practice. We were a bit shaky on our serves today, so we’ll try to get that ironed out before our next match.”

Jacob Quinkert and Landon Carrico earned 6-0, 6-0 victories at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively, for Providence.

NEXT: Providence (1-0) hosts Seymour, Thursday at Community Park.

• Pirates beat CAI, 3-1: Charlestown got a 6-1, 6-0 victory from Tyler Massie at No. 3 singles and swept the doubles events for a 3-1 victory at Christian Academy on Tuesday.

Charlestown’s Ben Delaney and the Warriors’ Justin Brown were tied at 6-3, 3-6, 4-4 at No. 1 singles when the rain came to call off the rest of the match.

Bradley Gay won at No. 2 singles for CAI, beating Kyle Jackson 6-4, 6-4.

NEXT: Charlestown (1-0) at Silver Creek, tonight; Christian Academy hosts New Washington, next Tuesday.

• Braves fall just short: Host Borden dropped a 3-2 decision in its opener against North Harrison on Tuesday.

The Braves got wins at No. 2 singles from Joseph Vollstedt, who was a 6-1, 6-2 victor over Craig Waynescott, and at No. 2 doubles where Dylan Scott and Dawson Nale earned a 6-4, 6-4 triumph over Kelby Deaton and Cameron Higdon.

NEXT: Borden (0-1) hosts Austin, Thursday.

• Floyd “B” team gets by Creek:
Silver Creek sophomore Lilly Smith shot a meet-best 42 at Hidden Creek Golf Club on Tuesday, but Floyd Central’s B-team edged the Dragons, 181-184.

Along with Smith, fellow sophomore Charlotte Seaton shot a 43 for the Dragons.

“[Smith] and Charlotte continue to push each other,” Silver Creek coach Joe Ledbetter said. “Both of them are sophomores and they’re both very serious about their golf. I have a feeling, by the end of the year, we’ll have breakthroughs from both of them.”

The Highlanders were more consistent to take the win. Gretchen Garrett and Megan Striegel led Floyd as each shot a 44 at the par-35 course. Sydney LaDuke followed with a 45 and Katie Bruno shot a 48.

NEXT: Silver Creek vs. Borden, Charlestown and Eastern, Thursday at Hidden Creek; Floyd Central JV at South Central, Thursday at Chariot Run.

• Pioneers fall in tri-match: On Monday, Providence finished second to winner Christian Academy of Louisville in a triangular match at Covered Bridge Golf Club, 184-190. Madison Shawe fielded an incomplete team.

Alexa Wilson paced the Pioneers with a 42. Also for Providence, Colleen Geldermann shot a 46, Brooklin Grantz fired a 49 and Mary Ann Fitzpatrick and Nicole Kruer each had a 53.

NEXT: Providence vs. North Harrison and Scottsburg, Thursday at New Salisbury.

• Floyd Central at New Albany boys’ tennis, rescheduled for today.
