H.S. BASKETBALL: Lefevre expected to be named Tipton coach tonight

Former Providence coach won three sectionals, two regionals on Pioneer bench

TIPTON — Several sources, including Tipton Tribune sports editor Michelle Garmon, have confirmed that Providence head boys’ basketball coach Lou Lefevre will be announced as the new Tipton head coach at tonight’s Tipton Community School Corporation board meeting tonight.

Lefevre helped guide the Pioneer to a 175-52 record in 10 years on the Providence sidelines, including a 15-7 mark a year ago. He won three sectionals and both of Pioneers’ regional championships in his decade-long stint at Providence. Lefevre learned that his contract would not be renewed at Providence on May 30.

If approved by the school board, Lefevre will take over an already-successful program. The Blue Devils have won seven sectional titles in the past 14 years, six in the past seven years and four in a row. Under former head coach Brad Dickey, who vacated the position when he left for Franklin High School, the Blue Devils had won three straight regional crowns until losing to Lewis Cass in the regional semifinal the past season.

Like Providence, Tipton competes in Class 2A. The program has won 24 sectionals and six regionals in its history. There have been many Blue Devils greats, including former North Carolina Tar Heel and NBA player Darrell Elston, former Purdue Boilermaker Matt Waddell and James Ertel, former Notre Dame great Mark Ertel, former Georgia Bulldog Dick McIntosh, former Indiana Hoosier Derek Elston and 2013 Indiana All-Star Mike Crawford, who is currently at Saint Louis.
