Court records detail accused Boston bomber's gruesome injuries

Newly released court documents show the extent of accused Boston bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev's injuries when he was captured on April 19 in Watertown, Mass.

Trauma surgeon Dr. Stephen Ray Odom said during a court proceeding in April that Tsarnaev, 20, suffered "multiple gunshot wounds, the most severe of which appears to have entered through the left side inside of his mouth and exited the left face, lower face."

Odom also gives details of Tsarnaev's fractured skull, injured spine and gunshot wounds to his extremities.

DR. ODOM: He has multiple serious injuries that require ongoing inpatient medical care at this time. He is currently in an intensive care unit, though his status is not critical.

THE COURT: Can you give me a brief summary of his injuries?

DR. ODOM: He has multiple gunshot wounds, the most severe of which appears to have entered through the left side inside of his mouth and exited the left face, lower face. This was a high-powered injury that has resulted in skull-base fracture, with injuries to the middle ear, the skull base, the lateral portion of his C1 vertebrae, with a significant soft-tissue injury, as well as injury to the pharynx, the mouth, and a small vascular injury that's been treated. He has, in addition to this, some ophthalmologic injuries that have been treated.

Tsarnaev was captured in April after a massive manhunt and was eventually found hiding in a boat in the backyard of a Watertown home. Witnesses said police opened fire on the boat and photos from the arrest show Tsarnaev bloody and slumped over the boat's side.

Tsarnaev faces the death penalty for the Boston Marathon bombing, which left three dead and more than two hundred injured.
