COLLEGE ATHLETICS: Grenadier softball picked first in KIAC coaches’ poll


NEW ALBANY —  The 2014 Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference preseason softball poll was released Tuesday by KIAC officials.

The defending regular-season champion and conference-tournament champion IU Southeast was selected as the top team. IU Southeast received six first-place votes and 62 total points.

IU Southeast is ranked No. 26 in the 2014 preseason NAIA Softball Coaches’ Top 25 poll.

Point Park University sits in the second position with two first-place votes and 57 points. Carlow University is third in the poll with 37 points. Asbury and Berea are tied for fourth with 36 points. Brescia University is sixth with 32 points, followed by Midway College (16) and Alice Lloyd College (12).

Conference play will begin on Saturday, March 1. The season will conclude with the KIAC Tournament in May.


The IU Southeast baseball team has been picked to finish second in the KIAC by the league’s coaches in the preseason poll, which was announced on Tuesday.

KIAC coaches selected Point Park as the top team. The Pioneers received five first-place votes and 35 total points. They were selected 19th nationally in the 2014 NAIA Baseball Coaches’ Preseason Top 25 poll.

Last season, Point Park finished 39-16 overall and advanced to the NAIA Baseball National Championship. IU Southeast was selected second by the coaches with one first-place vote and 31 total points. The Grenadiers finished as the KIAC Tournament runners-up last season.

Brescia was selected third in the conference with 21 points. Asbury sits in the fourth spot in the preseason poll with 17 points. Berea College is fifth with 12 points, followed by Alice Lloyd with 10 points.

IU Southeast and Point Park met in the final of the 2013 KIAC Baseball Tournament, with the Pioneers defeating the Grenadiers 8-6.

Conference play will begin in March. The season will conclude with the KIAC Tournament in late April.


The IU Southeast men’s tennis team has been picked to finish third in the KIAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll, which was announced by the league office on Tuesday.

The defending conference-tournament and regular-season champion Asbury was selected as the top team. The team also advanced to the NAIA National Tournament last season.

Asbury received six first-place votes and 48 points. The Eagles were selected as the No. 33 team in the 2014 NAIA Men’s Tennis Preseason Coaches’ Poll.

Brescia University is in the second spot with one first-place vote and 42 points. IU Southeast is third with 32 points. IU East is fourth with 27 points, followed by Berea College (21), St. Louis College of Pharmacy (19) and Alice Lloyd (seven).
