COLLEGE BASEBALL: Godfrey named MAC Player of the Year

New Albany grad among conference’s best offensive players

MUNCIE — New Albany High School graduate and Ball State senior outfielder Sean Godfrey was named the Mid-American Conference Player of the Year on Tuesday.

Plus Godfrey was one of six Cardinals to make the 2014 All-MAC teams, as Godfrey earned a first-team selection.

Godfrey is one of the most prolific offensive players in the MAC this season. He currently ranks first in the conference in hits (76), total bases (123) and doubles (20), while he is second in home runs (nine) and RBIs (52). In addition, he is third in slugging percentage (.544), fourth in runs scored (46), seventh in stolen bases (21) and eighth in batting average (.336).

Godfrey also ranks among the nation’s leaders in those statistical categories. He is 14th in doubles, 23rd in RBIs, 30th in total bases and 40th in hits.

Godfrey was named the MAC West Division Player of the Week twice in the 2014 campaign. He helped Ball State (38-16, 22-4 MAC) win the MAC West championship and the MAC regular-season title. The Cardinals are the No. 1 seed in this week’s MAC Tournament in Avon, Ohio.

Godfrey was a three-year letterwinner at New Albany and a former News and Tribune Area Player of the Year. He was named to the All-Hoosier Hills Conference team twice and was an All-State honorable-mention pick as a senior.
