ON THE SPOT: Rogers a major part of Cardinals’ rotation

NA grad has returned to full strength after Tommy John surgery

LOUISVILLE — Last Sunday in the final game of the Louisville Regional in the NCAA Division I baseball tournament, former New Albany High School standout Josh Rogers showed the Bulldog faithful, Southern Indiana baseball fans and the entire country how much perseverance he has.

The 6-foot-3 left-handed pitcher got the victory in the Cardinals’ nationally-televised 4-1 victory over archrival Kentucky at Jim Patterson Stadium, evening the freshman’s record at 3-3. In six innings of work, Rogers allowed one run (earned) on four hits with five strikeouts and no walks.

The win enabled Louisville (48-15) to advance to the Super Regional round. The Cardinals will host Kennesaw State (40-22) in this weekend’s best-of-three-game Super Regional series, which will start at 6:30 tonight at Patterson Stadium. The game will be televised on ESPNU. Rogers is scheduled to start Game 3 on Sunday if the series is tied at one win apiece.

Rogers’ tumultuous journey to last Sunday’s triumph started last spring as a senior at New Albany. Rogers tore the ulnar collateral ligament in his throwing elbow during a game against Fort Wayne Carroll, ending his final campaign with the Bulldogs.

After having Tommy John surgery on his elbow, Rogers went through a grueling rehabilitation process to return his elbow to full strength.

Following his rehab, Rogers had to learn the challenging environment of pitching at the Division I level. Along with his .500 record this season, Rogers has a 3.63 ERA with 47 strikeouts. In 14 appearances and nine starts, Rogers has surrendered 25 runs on 44 hits and 12 walks. Opponents only have a batting average of .237 against the southpaw.

On Tuesday, two days after his victory over Kentucky, Rogers talked to sports writer Kevin Harris at Patterson Stadium about his return to form and other items as the News and Tribune continued its “On the Spot” series.
