The Indianapolis Star reported on its Web site on Wednesday that the Indiana University and University of Louisville men’s basketball teams have signed a contract to play each other in the Jimmy V Classic on Dec. 9, 2014 at Madison Square Garden in New York.
The newspaper reported that it discovered the contract for the contest between the Hoosiers and Cardinals in a response from IU’s legal department on a public records request by The Star.
The Star reported the contract is with ESPN, which coordinates and televises the Jimmy V Classic, and will pay IU $200,000.
IU assistant athletic director for media relations J.D. Campbell confirmed to The Star that the Hoosiers will play in the Jimmy V Classic in 2014, but he did not disclose the opponent.
“Usually a matchup is announced by ESPN, and until the event is finalized by ESPN, it would be premature to say any matchup is official,” Campbell told The Star.
IU and U of L have not battled on the basketball court since Feb. 1, 2003 at Freedom Hall in Louisville. The Cardinals defeated the Hoosiers, 95-76. IU beat Louisville at Assembly Hall the prior year on Feb. 9, 2002, 77-62.
The Hoosiers lead the all-time series over the Cardinals, 10-6.
