COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Former Floyd QB Smith makes IU roster

Daniel reportedly will be added soon

BLOOMINGTON — When Indiana University’s football roster was announced last week, there were a couple of surprises concerning local players.

Former Floyd Central quarterback Bryce Smith earned a walkon spot on Indiana’s initial roster.

Smith threw for 459 yards and a pair of touchdowns and ran for another 52 yards before being injured in Week 6 against Columbus East last season. As a junior, Smith completed 47 percent of his throws for 954 yards and 11 scores and rushed for 101 yards and a TD.

“[Smith] has been a very hard worker and was having an excellent senior season until he got injured midway through the year,” Highlanders coach Brian Glesing said. “We are excited about him making a Big Ten Roster.”

The biggest surprise was that Charlestown’s Aaron Daniel — the 2012 News and Tribune Player of the Year — was not on the roster. According to Peegs.com, Daniel and the rest of the preferred walkons will be added to the 105-man roster, likely early this week.

Daniel threw for 2,075 yards and 36 touchdowns and rushed for another 1,766 and 32 scores while leading the Pirates to Mid-Southern Conference and sectional championships as a senior.

The Hoosiers, who are coming off of a 4-8 season including Big Ten wins over Illinois and Iowa, open their season Aug. 29 at home against Indiana State.
