The IU Southeast baseball team picked up its second-straight win with an 8-5 defeat of Hanover College on Monday night.
Frank Pluskota hit his first home run of the season to open the scoring for IU Southeast in the bottom of the first and the Grenadiers’ offense was off and running.
IU Southeast (10-8) added two more runs in the second when Marcus Howard tripled to score Jarret Young and Alex Potter to make it 4-2 Grenadiers.
After Hanover cut the lead to 4-3 in the top of the third, the Grenadiers responded with a three-run inning. After Pluskota walked and Louis Helmburg doubled, Kyle Asher singled to left to plate the pair. Jake Roberts singled home Asher and it was 7-3.
The Grenadiers added one more run in the fourth. Josh Beams tripled and Pluskota singled for his third RBI of the game.
Pluskota finished 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. Josh Beams went 2-for-4 as did Kyle Asher.
Patrick Yochum picked up his first win of the season in four innings of relief. He struck out two and gave up one hit.
Mitch Hunnicutt took the loss for the Panthers, who dropped to 2-6.
IU Southeast hosts No. 23-ranked Georgetown today at 3 p.m.
HEINES NAMED KIAC SOFTBALL PLAYER OF WEEK
Indiana University Southeast freshman Katelyn Heines was named the KIAC Softball Player of the Week by KIAC officials on Monday.
Heines — a Holy Cross (Ky.) product — ended the week with a .385 batting average (5-for-13) in five games played last week as the Grenadiers finished the week 2-3. The IU Southeast freshman second baseman had at least one hit in four of the five games including a 2-for4 game against William Woods (Mo.). She finished the week with five runs scored, one home run, one stolen base and one RBI. Heines is hitting .417 on the season.
IU Southeast is currently 5-4 overall and 1-1 in conference play. They will return to action on March 13 when they travel to Berea College for a doubleheader.
LEANHART WINS PITCHING HONOR FOR SECOND TIME
Indiana University Southeast freshman Jessica Leanhart was named the KIAC softball pitcher of the week by KIAC officials on Monday. This is her second Pitcher of the Week award of the season.
Indiana University Southeast finished the week 2-3. Leanhart finished the week 2-0 after earning wins against Lindenwood-Belleville and William Woods (Mo.). She finished the week with a 4.20 earned run average and struck out eight opposing batters in 6 2-3 innings. The freshman pitcher is 4-1 on the season with a 4.32 earned run average in 22 2-3 innings.
IU Southeast is currently 5-4 overall and 1-1 in KIAC play. The Grenadiers return to action on Thursday when they travel to Berea College (Ky.) for a doubleheader.
