IU Southeast holds Bill Ryall Civic Free-Throw Shootout

Event raises funds for women's tennis program

NEW ALBANY — The IU Southeast women’s tennis team held its annual Bill Ryall Civic Free-Throw Shootout on Thursday as members of the Rotary Club of New Albany took on the Kiwanis of Historic New Albany in a basketball skills competition.

The event was created by the late Bill Ryall, a longtime Rotarian and the former Grenadiers’ women’s tennis coach. The contest has been a fixture on the Southern Indiana calendar for years. The event was renamed in Ryall’s honor this year.

“This event meant so much to Coach Ryall,” IU Southeast athletic director Joe Glover said. “He organized it each year and it was always a highlight on the calendar. It was only right to rename it in his honor.”

All funds raised benefit the women’s tennis team.

“I can’t thank the Rotary Club of New Albany and the Kiwanis of Historic New Albany enough for all their help and support of IU Southeast athletics,” Glover said. “Our region is extremely lucky to have so many dedicated and civic minded individuals leading our community.”

Award winners at the event were the following:

• Team free-throw challenge winner: Kiwanis of Historic New Albany.

• Best individual free-throw shooter: Brian Brinkworth (Kiwanis).

• Three-point team contest: Rotary Club of New Albany.

• Best individual 3-point shooter: Adam Naville (Rotary).

• Three-on-three basketball winner: Rotary Club of New Albany.
