COLLEGE BASKETBALL: IUS moves into KIAC championship game

Grenadiers beat Berea 78-69, will face Cincinnati Christian for title today

PIPPA PASSES, Ky. — IU Southeast men’s basketball team pulled away from Berea in the second half and wil move on to the Kentucky-Indiana Athletic Conference championship following Friday’s 78-69 semifinal victory.

The NAIA Div. II No. 2 Grenaiders will face Cincinnati Christian, which defeated host Alice Llloyd 77-56 in the day’s first semifinal, today at 3:30 p.m. IU Southeast will be playing for their seventh straight KIAC championship.

Kevin Mitchell led the Grenadiers with 21 points and six rebounds. He went 9 of 11 from the free throw line.

Cameron Mitchell added 13 points and Vernon Payne had 12 points, seven rebounds and five blocked shots for the balanced Grenadiers, who shot just 43.8 percent from the floor. IU Southeast held Berea to 21 of 59 from the floor (40 percent) and forced 16 turnovers.

IU Southeast (25-3) led by 12 with five minutes left in the first half but key 3-pointers by Berea cut into the lead and the Grenadiers led just 42-40 at halftime.

Berea took the lead a briefly in the second half but was unable to pull away. IU Southeast kept the Moutaineers in it with as the offense stalled throughout the game. The Grenadiers shot just 30 percent (8-of-27) from the field in the second half and 38 percent for the game.

Daishon Robinson led Berea with 16 points.
