COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Grenadiers’ rally falls short in 65-61 to Carlow

IU Southeast splits doubleheader with Point Park

NEW ALBANY — The IU Southeast women’s basketball team dropped a close decision to Carlow University 65-61 on Saturday in IU Southeast coach Robin Farris’s 700th game on the sideline.

Carlow (4-3, 1-1 KIAC) led by as many as 13 points in the first half before IU Southeast cut the lead to 37-33 at the break.

Ashmere Woods finished with a game-high 21 points and Heather Wheat added 20.

The Grenadiers (4-4, 0-2 KIAC) struggled offensively throughout and shot just 34 percent for the game. IU Southeast was 9-for-33 (27 percent) from 3-point range. Carlow shot 46 percent for the game and was led by Heather Kaczorowski’s 17 points.

IU Southeast heads to Cincinnati Clermont on Thursday.


IU Southeast splits doubleheader with Point Park

The 11th-ranked IU Southeast men’s basketball team used a double-double from Jeffersonville grad Kegan Clark to defeat Point Park University 96-91 in the Grenadiers’ conference opener on Friday.

Clark had a season-high 28 points and 12 rebounds to pace IU Southeast. Four other Grenadiers scored in double-figures. Tyrell Means had 16, Jake Simpson finished with 12 and both Cameron Mitchell and Haris Batalevic contributed with 11 points each.

It was a close game throughout the first half and the Grenadiers led 48-42 at the break. IU Southeast (6-2, 1-0 KIAC) was buoyed by Clark’s 13 first-half points. In the second half the Grenadiers got hot offensively and opened a 21-point lead at the 14:15 mark.

Point Park (5-3, 1-1 KIAC) cut the lead to single digits late in second half behind the work of Josh Arnold, who had a game-high 32 points.

The Grenadier men head to Fort Wayne to face Saint Francis on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

Wheat had 18 points and Andrea Owen and Woods each had 10 points, but the Grenadiers fell 74-69 in double overtime to Point Park University on Friday.

Point Park’s (5-2, 1-1 KIAC) Ja’Nia McPhatter dominated the Grenadiers inside and had a game-high 28 points and 19 rebounds.

IU Southeast (4-3, 0-1 KIAC) led by as many as 15 in the first half, but Point Park came back behind McPhatter and Emily Schartner, who had 25 points.

IU Southeast’s offense could not execute down the stretch and the Grenadiers lost their conference opener for the first time since the 2006-07 season.
