VAN HOY: A last-minute election reminder

Primary Election Day in Indiana is just more than a week away, and that means we’re seeing letters to the editor in support of candidates flow into the News and Tribune offices.

Before you go to the polls between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, we urge readers to turn to the newspaper and newsandtribune.com to educate themselves by reading our staff-produced election previews, which have already started publishing, and our special Voters’ Guide, which will publish Tuesday, April 29.

All this content will be posted at newsandtribune.com and can be found by clicking our Election 2014 link on our homepage. The Voters’ Guide will be posted there in PDF format once it publishes Tuesday.

As readers prepare to go to the polls, some through early voting, I also wanted to remind them of some deadlines and guidelines when it comes to political letters to the editor.

Contact me via the avenues at the end of this column if you have questions. Don’t forget to vote, and be sure to pick up a copy of the News and Tribune on May 7 for the best coverage of Southern Indiana elections.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

• The deadline for submitting election-related letters is 5 p.m. Monday, April 28. Letters will be published through the weekend of May 3-4, but no election letters will be printed on Election Day or the day prior, May 5.

• The News and Tribune does not endorse candidates, nor will we allow our regular Opinions page columnists to endorse candidates.

• We will not publish letters to the editor from candidates promoting their own candidacy. We do accept letters from candidates endorsing other candidates.

• Letters from readers for publication should stick to campaign issues and not include personal attacks or rumors. Candidates will be allowed to respond to letters questioning them about issues.

Submission information can be found at the top right corner of this page. Letters should be 400 words or less. Also, the News and Tribune will ask letter-writers if they are related to a candidate or if they work for a candidate’s campaign and note when those relationships exist.
