DODD: 40 years too soon

“I don’t want to brag or make anyone jealous but I can still fit into the earrings I wore in high school!” — Anonymous

The class of 1973 might celebrate its 40th year reunion sometime this year. That happens to be my high school graduating class from Jeffersonville High School.

There is a bit of a problem with the plan. As of now, nobody is quite sure who will chair this year’s reunion committee. We have had some issue in the past. The class of 1973 did not have a 30-year reunion. After I wrote a column asking why, I eventually wound up on a committee to organize a late get-together that we called our collective 50th birthday celebration. I think we pulled that one off in 2005.

At that celebration, we asked for volunteers to organize this year’s 40th class reunion. So far, nobody seems to want to head up the task and only a couple of the names of those volunteers are known.

So today, I am going to reach out to all of those 1973 JHS graduates to consider a couple of things. One is that anyone who would like could send me an e-mail with their full names in high school. I will folder them until we can get a committee together. Secondly, if possible, we need at least five or six volunteers who are willing to work on the event.

The theory from those of us who were on the last committee is to try and organize as much as can be done by using the Internet. As to date, there appears to be no money for any expenses. If a graduate is willing to offer a donation up front to defer any costs, that would be super as well. Obviously, the hope would be that whenever the reservations are made and those who wish to pay in advance do so, there will be enough to cover the costs and to reimburse the initial donations.

It would be nice to spread the word to any and all of our classmates. If you know the e-mail addresses of anyone out of town, please send them as well. Some people are not as comfortable at using Facebook. For those who wish to comment or address any of our fellow alumni, the Facebook page is Jeffersonville High School Class of 1973 Reunion.

On behalf of the class, I would like to thank a couple of people who have stepped forward to help with this year’s reunion. I will try to have further updates in the future when there is a date certain, location, costs, etc. I look forward to hearing from anyone who would like to e-mail myself or send a greeting via Facebook.

Also, I’ll offer a bit of advice to pass on to this year’s graduating high school classes. Don’t just vote for the best looking and most popular kids for the student body president and other class officers. Choose those you think are willing to step up and perform their duties to insure future class reunions take place. This really does require some dedication and hard work to successfully organize.

It would be a shame to pass up this year’s gathering. Not to sound cliché, but we are not getting any younger. The past 10 years should offer proof enough that it is almost certain, for some from the class of 1973, this might be the final opportunity to visit with old friends.

To quote the humorist Bennett Cerf, “Middle age is when your classmates are so gray and wrinkled and bald they don’t recognize you.”

Let’s all clean up real nice and prove him wrong. Just in case, I do have one unsolicited suggestion for those who decide to run this year’s event: Please have everyone wear a name tag just in case he was right.
