VAN HOY: Talking Dale Moss and more

Read well-known columnist’s work starting today

— Don’t let the years of bylines in the Courier-Journal in Louisville fool you, Dale Moss is a Southern Indiana guy.

He lives in Jeffersonville, near the Ohio River, in an old house that has been in his family since his great-great grandparents built it during the Civil War.

That house has seen a lot of stories. So has Dale Moss.

He’s told them, as well, to me, you and hundreds of thousands of others.

Starting today, he’s going to be telling more in a weekly column exclusively in the News and Tribune.

It’s a homecoming for Moss, even though he’s never left Jeffersonville.

Moss told me a story recently of how he started down his 40-plus year path in journalism. He came to The Evening News looking for a job, but not one in the newsroom. When he inquired about employment, he was asked if he’d like to go cover a game and write sports articles.

He figured that was far better than doing manual labor, so he said yes.

And then you know the rest of the story.

Moss retired from the C-J in 2012, after 25 years as an Indiana columnist for the paper. There, he wrote about 3,500 columns and recently published a book of his favorite work, titled “Mosswords.”

That’s a pretty good title, we figured, so we’ve decided to keep it for his column with the News and Tribune.

Moss will have a focus on telling the stories of the people and places of some of our smaller communities in Clark and Floyd counties, as well as his hometown and our larger cities and towns.

We’re thrilled to have him as part of our news organization. People like talking to Dale and it’s obvious in his work. He’s simply a very good storyteller, something that’s always in vogue, no matter if the mode of delivery of the message has changed a little since Moss started his career in 1971.

In his column on page A1 today, you’ll find contact information for Moss. If you have a good column idea, send it his way, or drop me a line. My contact information is at the bottom of this column.

Feel free to tell Dale your story. He’ll do a great job of sharing it with our readers. Look for his column each Wednesday in the paper and at newsandtribune.com
