CUMMINS — Should we divide into red and blue nations?

— My family is more important to me than my government is, and so is God, who told me that he was impressed with our government, its freedom to speak and everything. He said, however, that he couldn’t understand two things — how a minority could shut it down and how stupid it was to crash against a debt ceiling.

In one prayer to Him, I said, “Be patient with Washington, which I think will eventually learn to negotiate and compromise.” He said, “You aren’t implying that I will negotiate and compromise my principle commandments, are you?” No I’m not. Who am I to question the Biblical constitution and its 10 commandments? The big difference between the Bill of Rights and the 10 commandments is that the Bill of Rights guarantees freedom to speak, worship, etc., whereas the commandments guarantee freedom to live eternally, provided the kingdom of men do not speak with forked tongues, as politicians do like the serpent in Eden.

This Disunited States of America shut down because of a squabble over the health care of God’s children. What would Jesus say? He’d probably say, “Heal them.” He worked primarily with the lame, sick and blind, which is what Congress is. But don’t you see that Affordable Care increases taxes and the size of government? Affordable Care is an oxymoron and some think it moronic. Some think it’s unconstitutional, but it’s a law and ruled constitutional by the Supreme Court, so there. But do you want your government’s nose in all of your business including the air you breathe, the food you eat and the sex you do or don’t have? Do you want government regulating guns, campaign contributions and Miley Cyrus’ waywardness? What’s next, dogs running loose and mandatory Pooper-Scoopers?

The government reminds me of the modern-American democratic family. When I was forced to convert from a Biblical-model patriarch to a nuclear family participant, I began facing debt ceilings, too. But I take pride in never shutting down. Perhaps it was because, rather than trying to sit on a throne, I modeled my marriage and resultant family on the U.S. Constitution, with checks and balances. I asked my wife to assume the role of a vice president such as Dan Quayle or Dick Cheney, but she wanted to be the commander-in-chief. We jockeyed back and forth until the children came. You know what happened then. I assumed the role of secretary of the exterior. Pew Research once polled my family, and during one debt crises, they favored ousting me. I think government and families worked better back during the days of Moses and George Washington. Neither of them ever shut down.

Tell me who the Mother of our country is. We don’t have one. That’s because women couldn’t vote and slavery was legal back when the forefathers thought they had foresight. What happened, though, was that slavery was eventually outlawed and women gained the right to vote about 50 years later. Now, we have a black president, and I predict that Mother Hillary Clinton will nose out Sen. Ted “Mega-Mouth” Cruz in the presidential election in 2016. That is, if our country opens up again.

How did our country get in such a mess, like Mesopotamia? There is a fine line between sanity and insanity and Washington is on the brink. Sanity is talking things over with those of differing viewpoints. Don’t call it negotiate; call it good sense. And compromise is not a dirty word; it keeps the world afloat, as power, money and greed leads to no good end.

You listen to the “breaking news” from the Capitol steps, as a high or low ranking government official tells you what the American people want. Which Americans? Those who want Obamacare and those who don’t, those who want clean air to breathe and those who prefer smoke, and those who need food stamps and those who say, “Find a job.”

Since we’re divided, why don’t we go ahead and break into United Red and Blue States? Each nation would eventually declare peace, after fighting the bloody, civil war we’re now in. United Blue could provide health care, food and control guns for its citizens. United Red could form big businesses and sell products to United Blue. But Blue would not have the resources to buy bread. Therefore, Red loans money to Blue at an exorbitant rate. Maybe that wouldn’t work, but why don’t we try reuniting again.
