VAN HOY: It’s election time for the newspaper

Here are some things to remember as Nov. 6 approaches

Election day this fall is Tuesday, Nov. 6, and the tight presidential race between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney should bring out voters for county and state-level races as well.

Of interest are battles for U.S. Senate and governor in Indiana, as well as the state’s 9th District seat in Congress. Also, school board seats are up for grabs in the area’s four public school districts.

Election time also means the News and Tribune’s candidate questionnaires have been mailed out. Local candidates — because of time constraints, we did not mail questionnaires to Statehouse candidates this election cycle — have until 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 15, to return responses, which will be published up to Election Day. If you are a candidate and have not received your questionnaire form, contact me via one of the means listed at the end of this column.

As Nov. 6 nears, here are some of the newspaper’s guidelines to remember. Also, simply remember to get out and vote between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Election Day, or vote early if you choose to.

ELECTION LETTER GUIDELINES

• We do not accept regular or guest columns from political candidates actively running for office.

• The News and Tribune does not endorse candidates, nor will we allow our regular Opinions page columnists to endorse candidates.

• From this point, we will not publish letters to the editor from candidates promoting their own candidacy. We do accept letters from candidates endorsing other candidates.

• Letters from readers for publication should stick to campaign issues and not include personal attacks or rumors. Candidates will be allowed to respond to letters questioning them about issues.

• The deadline for submitting election-related letters is 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30. Letters will be published through Nov. 5, but no election letters will be printed on Election Day, Nov. 6. Submission information can be found at the top right corner of this page. Letters should be 400 words or less. Also, the News and Tribune will ask letter-writers if they are related to a candidate or if they work for a candidate’s campaign.
