TRIBUNE CHEERS AND JEERS: Oct. 28, 2009

CHEERS

... to Gohmann Asphalt for fixing the uneven manhole covers on recently paved Green Valley Road. Thanks for getting the job done right and making my commute to work less bumpy.

— Staff writer Roni Montgomery

... to Dr. Schooler and the nurses in the emergency room at Floyd Memorial Hospital and Health Care Services. My 2-year-old son had an accident last week that left him in need for stitches on his eyebrow. The procedure was simple, but very traumatic for a toddler. The entire emergency room staff — from the women at the admissions desk to the nurse who brought the discharge papers — went well above my expectations to make my son’s visit more pleasant. They made sure his favorite cartoon was on the in-room television, and brought him stickers, crayons, books, stuffed animals and even a popsicle after the procedure. Sometimes the little things are what help the most. Thank you.

JEERS

... to the Floyd County Health Department for not being more prepared for Saturday morning’s H1N1 vaccine clinic for children. When I arrived 15 minutes early there was a long line extending out the door and around the building. My family — and others with children ranging from six months to five years — waited almost two hours in very windy, chilly and sometimes wet conditions before we made it to the door. Knowing the vaccine is in high demand and that morning temperatures at the end of October are cool, the Health Department should have moved the clinic to a venue more suitable for young children. I was very disappointed to learn another clinic will be held at the same location Thursday evening. The 4-H fairgrounds, a school gymnasium, or The Salvation Army would have been much better. My advice to parents planning on attending — prepare for the elements. Pack plenty of warm clothing, sippy cups, snacks and entertainment.
