Home Movie Day event part of bicentennial celebration

NEW ALBANY — As part of New Albany’s Bicentennial Film Festival, the New Albany-Floyd County Public Library in cooperation with the Southern Indiana Arts Council and the New Albany Bicentennial Commission will be premiering Home Movie Day in New Albany from 2 to 4 p.m. Oct. 19 in the library’s Strassweg Auditorium.

The New Albany and Floyd County community is invited to submit original home movies in 8 mm, Super 8 mm, 16 mm, VHS or DVD for inspection and consideration for screening [depending on condition] on Home Movie Day to a community audience. All home movies are welcome, though since this is the bicentennial year, movies shot in and around New Albany and Floyd County will receive preferential treatment.

Home Movie Day will also feature a screening of a 1937 flood film shot by former New Albany resident Earl Hedden. As well as “Stroll Along Mansion Row,” a tour of the mansions along Main Street put out by the historical society in 1981 and narrated by local historian David Condra. Along with free popcorn, attendees will also have the opportunity to receive consultation on the preservation of their home movies as well as their place in local history.

An international event observed by more than 50 cities and 13 countries worldwide, the 11th annual Home Movie Day is a celebration of amateur films and filmmaking, home movies and film preservation. Film archivists established the event to highlight the cultural significance of home movies and the need to properly preserve them as artifacts of culture.

Film submissions will be accepted at the New Albany-Floyd County Public Library’s Indiana History Room from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday or by appointment through Oct. 11.

To schedule an appointment, ask questions, or learn more about the event contact: Matt Eidem, archivist, New Albany-Floyd County Public Library, 812-949-3527 or meidem@nafclibrary.org
