A postal worker from Georgetown was hospitalized Monday after her vehicle was struck while she was delivering mail.

Tammy Byrn, 51, was trapped inside her U.S. Postal Service truck on the 8600 block of Ind. 64 and had to be extricated by the Georgetown Fire Department, according to an Indiana State Police press release.

According to police, Byrn had her emergency flashers activated when the vehicle was struck in the rear by an eastbound Ford Expedition driven by Karie Wessling, 25, of Georgetown.

Byrn was transported to University Hospital in Louisville with serious but non-life threatening injuries, the report states. Wessling was transported to Floyd Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The crash remains under investigation by the Floyd County Combined Accident Reconstruction Team, or CART. That group investigates all fatal crashes or those resulting in bodily injury with the potential for criminal charges.

The press release notes that the postal vehicle had a yellow sign mounted to the roof emblazoned with “U.S. Mail.”

ISP Trooper David A. Scott said Ind. 64 was closed for approximately two hours for investigation.

The postmaster at Georgetown recovered the remaining mail for delivery, Scott said.
