Paoli Pike repaired, open for travel

Floyd County Highway Department crews fixed and reopened Paoli Pike between East Luther Road and U.S. 150 this week.

The particular portion of Paoli Pike was closed due to collapsed roadway near Flemar Drive.

According to a news release, the roadway has been repaired and normal transit has resumed.

Gluten-free tasting fair Nov. 7

Rainbow Blossom’s New Albany Market will host a Gluten-free Tasting Fair to assist celiac disease sufferers from noon to 4 p.m. Nov. 7, at its location at 3003 Charlestown Crossing Way, New Albany.

In recent years the number of people converting to a wheat-free and gluten-free diet for various reasons — celiac disease, also referred to as gluten intolerance or celiac sprue, being among the top motivators — has grown along with the demand for wheat-free and gluten-free products of all types. While gluten-free products abound, finding foods that taste and cook the same as the familiar, gluten-rich standbys is not always easy. Holistic chef Jordana Van will be on hand offering samples of made-from-scratch baked goods, along with answering questions, and giving tips on gluten-free living and cooking to attendees. A complete selection of gluten-free items, including a dedicated gluten-free freezer section, are available at all five Rainbow Blossom locations.

AG warns of possible H1N1 fraud

Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller and the State Health Department say Internet retailers are selling “fraudulent, unapproved or useless” H1N1 flu medicines or remedies.

Instead of buying products online, they are urging Hoosiers to practice good hand-washing hygiene and receive the approved H1N1 flu vaccine from local health departments.

Officials also warn against Internet pharmacies claiming to sell generic versions of Tamiflu. No generic version of Tamiflu has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

IUS Concert Band to perform Nov. 8

The Music Department at Indiana University Southeast (IUS) will present the IUS Concert Band at 3 p.m. Nov. 8 in the Richard K. Stem Concert Hall on the IUS campus, 4201 Grant Line Road, New Albany.

Director Don McMahel leads the Commonwealth Brass Band. He and associate director, Nan Moore, with the 60-member ensemble will perform a diverse program of songs for the concert band, including “ And the Multitude with One Voice Spoke” by James L. Hosay; “Fantasy on ‘Madame Butterfly’” by Giacomo Puccini and arranged by Yo Goto; “L’Spirit Du Tour” by Randal Alan Bass; “The Boys of the old Brigade March” by W. Paris Chambers; “Monterosi” by Jacob de Haan; “Flying the Breeze” by Philip Sparke; “Arabesque” by Samuel R. Hazo; and “Ticonderoga March” by Leroy Anderson. Free parking for the concert is available in the Dogwood Lot only.

Tickets are $8 for adults, $5 for students, seniors, IUS faculty and staff.

Brandon’s House craft fair Dec. 5

Brandon's House Counseling Center, Inc., in New Albany, will be hosting its first-ever arts and crafts fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Dec. 5, in the Fellowship Hall at DePauw Methodist Church, 925 Vincennes St.

Phi Beta Psi hosts holiday auction

The Phi Beta Psi Sorority will host their annual holiday auction at 7 p.m. Nov. 5 at the Silver Creek Middle School, 495 North Indiana Ave., Sellersburg.

Admission is free and food and drinks will be served. Herman Thomas will be the auctioneer with proceeds going to cancer research grants.
