Charges expected to be filed in New Albany house fire that killed three children

Press conference scheduled for Tuesday afternoon

NEW ALBANY — Charges are expected to be filed Tuesday related to a Jan. 4 house fire in New Albany that claimed the lives of three children.

A release issued Monday from Maj. Keith Whitlow of the New Albany police department stated a news conference will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the assembly room on the third floor of the City-County Building to discuss the findings of the New Albany police and fire departments' investigation into the fire.

Speaking on the condition of anonymity, officials close to the investigation confirmed that charges against “an individual or individuals” will be announced during the press conference.

Officials declined to confirm the nature of the charges Monday evening or disclose the person or persons they will be filed against.

The NAFD initially ruled that the fire, which occurred at 335 Ealy St., was sparked by a flammable material that was too close to a space heater.

The fire claimed the lives of Trinity Hughes, 2, Tyrese Hughes, 4, and Tai’zah Hughes, 6. The children didn’t live in the home but were staying there with their mother, Theresa Hughes. A fourth child is recuperating from burns suffered in the blaze.
