INDOT hosting workshop on Disadvantaged Business Enterprises

NEW ALBANY — The Indiana Department of Transportation will host a workshop for small businesses interested in becoming certified as a Disadvantaged Business Enterprise.

The free workshop will begin at 3:30 p.m. and continue until 6 p.m. Nov. 8 at the New Albany-Floyd County Public Library, 180 W. Spring St.

Federal law requires that opportunities be made available for DBEs on projects funded with federal transportation dollars. To become a certified Disadvantaged Business Enterprise in Indiana, at least 51 percent of the business must be owned and controlled by individual or individuals who are a minority or woman, and are considered economically disadvantaged. Certification staff with INDOT’s Economic Opportunity Division will provide information, instructions and hands-on assistance on how to become Disadvantaged Business Enterprise-certified.

INDOT has been hosting training and networking opportunities throughout Indiana to increase opportunities for Disadvantaged Business Enterprises and to ensure adequate numbers are available for INDOT projects, including the Ohio River Bridges Project.

In June, Kentucky and Indiana announced an agreement that allows a Disadvantaged Business Enterprise certified in either state to receive credit on the bridges project in the other state. Indiana’s proposer teams on the project are required to submit detailed plans on how they intend to meet federal Disadvantaged Business Enterprise requirements and demonstrate previous success with the program.
