Get up and get moving in Southern Indiana

Step Up Saturday in Clark, Floyd counties on Saturday

NEW ALBANY — LaPorte Mayor Blair Milo had set several goals when she took office two years ago. One was to get her residents up and moving, so she began Fitness Friday.

Now, Milo is taking her message on the road.

With the support of Indiana University Health, the Indiana Alliance of YMCAs, General Insurance Services and city and county leaders, Milo organized Step Up Saturdays and is taking it to all 92 counties in the state. On Saturday, residents of Clark and Floyd counties will be able to participate, and Milo is expected to be at all three local events.

The 5k walk/run will be held at 9 a.m. at Colgate Park, Clarksville; noon at Sam Peden Community Park, New Albany; and 2 p.m. at Frank O’Bannon Park, Corydon.

Julie Callaway, senior wellness director at the Floyd County branch of the YMCA, is the director of the walk at Community Park. She said there are no signup fees or registration forms. All you have to do is show up at one of the three times listed above and walk or run. At the Community Park event, participants will go around the pedway three times.

“It’s not a race. We just want people to be active,” Callaway said.

Milo is hosting three 5k events in three different counties from March 1 through mid-October.

“It’s a sizable goal, some might even say a bit crazy to reach all 91 counties” [outside of LaPorte County], she said in a release. “The goal of this project is to encourage, or in some cases enhance opportunities for citizens to increase their physical activity.”

In December 2013, the United Health Foundation ranked Indiana 41st in the country for health due to levels of tobacco use, obesity, physical inactivity and diabetes. Most chronic diseases can be prevented through decreased tobacco use, 30 minutes of daily physical activity and a balanced diet.

“We thought if we can expand the reach of the Fitness Friday idea beyond the limits of LaPorte, we could encourage a statewide movement that improves, in fact steps up Hoosiers quality of life,” said General Insurance Services President Craig Menne in the release.
