Sheriff’s department halts mobile meth lab in Floyd County

Two arrested at Highlander Point shopping center

FLOYD COUNTY — Two men were arrested after attempting to purchase a primary ingredient in methamphetamine production from JayC Food Stores’ pharmacy at Highlander Point shopping center Friday afternoon, the Floyd County Sheriff’s Department reported.

William G. Neighbors, 22, Springville, and Brandon M. Neace, 22, Hardinsburg, were turned down by the pharmacy while attempting to buy pseudoephedrine, after a database revealed one of the men had already purchased his monthly limit of the medication.

Floyd County Sheriff’s Department Maj. Jeff Topping said the pharmacist became suspicious of the men, then watched them leave the store and walk toward a nearby Rite Aid, assuming they were going to try to buy pseudoephedrine from the neighboring pharmacy.

The description of their vehicle was provided to the FCSD, and a deputy responded to the scene. A deputy found Neace sitting in the vehicle, which was registered to Neighbors, in the parking lot of the Highlander Point shopping center between JayC and Rite Aid.

Topping said the deputy saw Neace using a pill crusher “in plain view” while seated in the passenger seat of the vehicle.

Neighbors was in the Rite Aid store when the deputy arrived, Topping said, and when he exited the store, he saw the deputy with Neighbors and began to quickly walk in the other direction. As Neighbors got about half a block from the Rite Aid, he was located and taken into custody by a responding Indiana State Police trooper.

Topping said Neighbors’ vehicle was searched and several items associated with making methamphetamine were found, including solvents, drain cleaner, camping fuel, Sudafed and rubber-hose tubing.

He said the vehicle was treated as a meth lab, and the ISP was contacted to safely process the scene.

Each man has been charged in Floyd County Superior Court No. 1 with class D felony possession of two or more chemical precursors with intent to manufacture controlled substances.
