‘Community champions’ sought for cancer study

Volunteers are needed for comprehensive program

NEW ALBANY — The American Cancer Society and Floyd Memorial Hospital and Health Services will host a Cancer Prevention Study-3 Community Champion kick-off to recruit Floyd County residents interested in spreading the word about the importance of participating in a historic nationwide study that will help researchers better understand the genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors that cause or prevent cancer.

At the event — to be held at 8 a.m. Friday, Jan. 4, with registration starting at 7:30 — participants will receive information needed to educate community members about the study and how they can make an appointment to enroll in the study between March 19-20.

Enrollment is being made possible in partnership with Baptist Hospital East, Floyd Memorial Hospital and the YMCA of Southern Indiana — Clark County Branch. The event will be held at Floyd Memorial, 1850 State St., New Albany, in the education room.

THE STUDY

To better understand the lifestyle, environmental, and genetic factors that cause or prevent cancer, the American Cancer Society’s Department of Epidemiology & Surveillance Research is recruiting 300,000 adults across the U.S. and Puerto Rico for a new research study, the Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3).

The details:

∞ Individuals may choose to enroll in the study if they are willing to make a long-term commitment to the study (which involves completing follow-up surveys periodically over the next 20 to 30 years), are between the ages of 30 and 65 years old and have never been diagnosed with cancer.

∞ Whether you are a cancer survivor, caregiver or are interested in honoring a friend or loved one who has battled cancer, anyone can serve as a CPS-3 community champion.

∞ For more information on CPS-3 and to register for the study, visit cps3kyin.org.

Speakers at the event include representatives from the American Cancer Society, Floyd Memorial Hospital and New Albany Mayor Jeff Gahan. The public is welcome.
